NATO officials on Wednesday urged the United Nations Security Council to back a controversial plan aimed at leading Serbia's breakaway province Kosovo on the road to independence, DPA reported. NATO "wants to see a resolution as quickly as possible," based on UN proposals which envisage internationally supervised independence for Kosovo, said NATO spokesman James Appathurai. The UN Security Council "should pass a resolution which would allow Kosovo and the whole region to move forward," Appathurai said. Members of the UN Security Council were in Brussels Wednesday for talks on Kosovo's status with European Union and NATO officials, before leaving for a fact-finding mission to Serbia and Kosovo. "This information mission is an important one, it comes at the right time," Appathurai told reporters before the UN envoys met with top Belgian officials. He also said that NATO was concerned about the security situation in Kosovo, adding that "the status quo is not tenable, there is a risk of a stalled process" in the region. NATO foreign ministers at a meeting in Oslo starting Thursday are expected to underline the alliance's determination to ensure security in Kosovo pending a final decision on the province's future status.
