The European Commission has pledged a further 2 million euros (2.6 million dollars) in aid for the victims of a cyclone in the southern African country of Mozambique, it announced today. The funding, which is on top of the 2 million euros donated by the EU to Mozambique following February's deadly Cyclone Favio, will go towards the rehabilitation of schools and health facilities in the southern Inhambane province, the Commission said in a joint statement with UNICEF issued in the Mozambican capital Maputo. Mozambique had already been plagued by weeks of flooding that displaced 160,000 people in the Zambezi River valley when Cyclone Favio slammed into the east coast on February 23, killing at least four people and leaving tens of thousands homeless. -- SPA
