Pakistan will modernize its surface, sub-surface and air borne naval fleet so as the protect its coastline and sea lanes to ensure smooth flow of maritime traffic in the region, according to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. "We are proud of our armed forces who have been performing their duties diligently in the hours of trial during war and peace times. The armed forces of Pakistan have set standards of professionalism and exhibited exemplary courage and capabilities in performing their duties," the prime minister told Admiral M. Afzal Tahir, Chief of the Naval Staff. He said that strong defense guarantees territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country and the government will continue to allocate all necessary resources to strengthen and modernize our armed forces. Aziz said Pakistan is acting as an anchor of peace and stability in a region that is faced with many challenges. Pakistan, the Prime Minister said favors regional restraint regime in strategic and conventional weapons. He said the government is committed to strengthening the armed forces on modern lines. Acting on the policy of self-reliance the government is focusing on improving the country s indigenous capabilities. The Agosta submarine, the JF-17 Thunder Aircraft and our missile and space programme are part of the efforts to achieve self reliance. On his part, Admiral Tahir briefed the Prime Minister about the professional matters related to Pakistan Navy. He thanked him for the government's consistent support for various plans and projects of Pakistan Navy.
