Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, a longtime stalwart of the governing Congress Party, was seriously injured when a truck slammed into his car in eastern India, news reports said. The accident took place late Saturday as Mukherjee, 71, was traveling back from his parliamentary constituency north of Calcutta, eastern India's main city, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. PTI described his condition as serious. However, it gave few details apart from quoting a doctor at a village clinic where the foreign minister was first taken as saying he had been «given stitches in his head and oxygen and saline to stabilize his condition.» He was then transferred to a hospital in a nearby town where a team of army doctors and neurosurgeons from Calcutta rushed to meet him, PTI said. His physicians said he was to be taken to Calcutta on Sunday if his condition worsened, the agency reported.
