About 15,000 Namibians in the north-east of the country bordering the Zambezi River have been displaced by flooding caused by heavy rains and are in urgent need of aid, the Namibian Red Cross said Monday, according to dpa. The Namibian Government had evacuated residents from the Caprivi Strip by helicopter to emergency camps in four areas, Namibian Red Cross secretary general Razzia Essack-Kauaria told South African radio. Temporary shelter, clean water and proper sanitation and other non-food relief supplies were in short supply in the camps and it was feared water-borne diseases such as cholera might break out, the official said. An international appeal by the International Red Cross for 10 million Namibian dollars for the victims of flooding both in Namibia and neighbouring Zambia had largely fallen on deaf ears due to the crisis in Zimbabwe, she added.
