The Sri Lankan Navy destroyed two suspected Tamil rebels arms ships off the south-eastern coast of Sri Lanka, raising the number of rebel vessels transporting military hardware destroyed to three within three weeks, a military spokesman said Sunday, according to dpa. The vessels were detected on Sunday off the Arugambay area, 360 kilometres south-east of the country, and destroyed after those aboard failed to identify themselves in one ship and in the other provided false information about their identity, the spokesman said. "The inmates in the first vessel retaliated with gunfire when the Navy approached to check the vessel while in the second one they provided false information and thereafter failed to follow the Navy orders, prompting the Navy to return fire," a military spokesman said.
