Two people were officially reported killed and in an explosion Friday at an ammunition warehouse at an army repair works in the Slovak town of Novaky, Slovak and Czech media reported. They quoted witnesses as saying two or three powerful detonations were felt kilometres away at around 1525 GMT. A plume of heavy smoke rose above the site. According to the TA3 news channel, the explosion took place in a facility used for dismantling ammunition, according to DPA. Defence ministry spokesman Vladimir Gemela told TA3 the blast was known initially to have killed two people and left five badly injured, while at least 40 more suffered lesser injuries. The shock from the blast shook apartment buildings in a town 13 kilometres away, one witness told TA3. Another said the blast shattered windows and roofing two kilometres away.
