Pakistani authorities in the port city of Karachi discovered and defused today an improvised explosive device planted in a stolen car that remained parked at a police station for more than 7 months. Three detonators and a battery were wired to 25 kilograms of explosives that did not go off owing to a faulty timer, dpa quoted Karachi police chief Azhar Ali Farooqi as saying. The unexpected discovery was made when the car was transported to another police station to be returned to the owner. It was a "procedural fault" that the vehicle was not checked when it was impounded in August 2006, Farooqi said in remarks reported by the Aaj television channel. Police evacuated their offices when the bomb was spotted in the trunk and a disposal squad later neutralized the device.
