On his first official visit as United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon insisted Sunday he would demand concrete commitments from Sudan concerning the humanitarian catastrophe in Darfur, according to Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa. Ban told journalists on a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo that "the U.N. cannot ignore the situation (in Darfur), while millions of people are suffering." "Many commitments have been made by the Sudanese government concerning UN and (African Union) operations in Darfur. I will urge (Sudanese) President Omar al-Bashir to make concrete commitments and implement these," he said before flying to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, where he was to meet Bashir.
