The new United Nations envoy to Sudan, Jan Eliasson, called on Thursday for a political solution to the Darfur crisis and urged a cessation of hostilities in the war-torn region, DPA reported. Eliasson replaces former UN Special Representative to the Secretary General, Jan Pronk, who was expelled from Sudan in October after writing on his personal blog against the Sudanese Army. "We need to try our very best from all corners to encourage a political process," Eliasson told reporters in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. "If we don't reach that goal, then we run the risk of the Darfur nightmare continuing year after year."
