White House counsel Harriet Miers, President George W. Bush's failed Supreme Court nominee and longtime advisor, announced her resignation on Thursday effective at the end of the month. White House spokesman Tony Snow said Bush reluctantly accepted her resignation after six years at the White House, including nearly two years as the president's top lawyer. “She put 12 years of service into six years,” he told reporters. Miers was part of the core group of loyal aides that Bush brought with him to Washington from Texas in early 2001. Snow said Miers has been having conversations with White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten about leaving and both agreed that it was time for a change at the White House office of legal counsel. He added that a search was underway for a replacement for Miers.
