The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has welcomed the latest peace overture by Pakistan to India on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Prof. Ihsanoglu, noted that the proposal made on Tuesday December 2006 by the Pakistan President, General Pervez Musharraf that his country was willing to give up its claim to Kashmir if India reciprocates by agreeing to self-governance under the joint supervision of both nations, a significant step in resolving the decades-old conflict and consolidating the three year-old peace process between the two neighbors. While therefore commending the Pakistani leader for this bold initiative Prof. Ihsanoglu urged India to promptly seize the opportunity and reciprocate the gesture which would not only lessen tension in the region but also serve the overall interest of the people. The Secretary General finally reiterates the commitment of the OIC to continue to encourage both India and Pakistan to work together in the search of a negotiated and just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
