Torrential seasonal rains have flooded parts of southern India, killing 35 people in the past two weeks and forcing more than 70,000 to move to higher ground, a news report said Monday. Collapsing homes cause most of the deaths, said state Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, according to a report from the Press Trust of India news agency. Tripathy said authorities shifted more than 65,000 people to schools and community halls in Chennai, the capital of southern Tamil Nadu state _ one of the worst-hit areas. Chennai was formerly known as Madras.
