Riot police fired tear gas and warning shots in air Saturday to break up thousands of stone-throwing opposition activists in the Bangladeshi capital, leaving at least 10 people injured, witnesses and news report said. The clashes broke out in central Dhaka after about 10,000 activists tried to hold a banned rally there, according to an Associated Press reporter at the scene. At least 10 people were injured, ATN Bangla TV station reported. The violence came as the government said it was delaying transferring power to an interim caretaker administration after the man who was supposed to lead the country through upcoming elections became ill. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's coalition government was due to hand over power to the interim administration Saturday, a day after completing her five-year term.
