Rebels in Chad briefly seized a town in the east of the country, government officials said Tuesday, amid fears of a renewed attack on the capital, according to AP. Rebels entered the town of Am Timan, 590 kilometers (360 miles) from the capital N'djamena, a day after the government said its forces repelled a rebel attack on Adde and Goz Beida, towns about 100 kilometers (60 miles) further east toward Sudan's western Darfur region. «The government appeals to the population to remain calm and to go normally about one's business,» said spokesman Hourmadji Moussa Doumgor. He said the Chadian army would defeat the rebels if they tried to repeat the failed attack launched on the capital in April. Chadian forces maintained a strong military presence in N'djamena Tuesday. In Paris, the French Defense Ministry said a ground-to-air missile was fired at a French reconnaissance plane flying over eastern Chad. The plane was not hit and French authorities say it was unclear who targeted the plane.
