The United States warned citizens on Monday against traveling to parts of Sri Lanka amid escalating fighting between government troops and separatist rebels, citing an increased risk of terrorist attacks. “Over the last several months, acts of terrorism including bombings and political assassinations have occurred in Sri Lanka,” the State Department said in a statement. “The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Sri Lankan military forces have clashed on several occasions, and this fighting has escalated in recent weeks,” the department wrote. The statement said most of the country has been unaffected by the violence, but warned Americans against visiting the Tamil-controlled north and east of the country.
