An Egyptian soldier was killed and another was seriously wounded Saturday while guarding the country's border with Israel in what appeared to be a crime carried out by a third soldier, security officials said according to The Assocaited Press. The incident occurred near the Taba border crossing, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak with the media. The officials identified the deceased as Ihab Gouda Mohammed, 22, and the wounded soldier as Mohammed Diyab Hassan. The two were taken to Mubarak Hospital in El Arish, they said. A third soldier was being questioned on suspicion of being behind the shooting, the officials said without elaborating. Shootings are common in the Sinai, but violence among Egyptian soldiers is rare. The area was occupied by Israel during the 1967 Mideast war and returned to Egypt in 1982, after the countries signed a peace treaty.
