U.S. President George W. Bush on Wednesday approved a $1.2 billion project to construct a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border to deter the flow of illegal immigrants. At a bill signing ceremony in the southwestern border state Arizona, Bush said the state-of-the-art border fence would secure the country and help end the national immigration crisis. "That's what the people of this country want. They want to know that we re modernizing the border so we can better secure the border," Bush said before signing the bill. The Mexican government has strongly opposed the project, claiming that it would damage bilateral relations. The $1.2 billion project is just a small part of a $33.8 billion Homeland Security funding bill that includes money for immigration measures. The proposed 1,100 kilometer fence will include vehicle barriers, infrared cameras and ground-based radars.
