Five people were killed in the collapse of a Montreal area expressway overpass when their vehicles were crushed underneath a tangle of concrete debris, Canadian police said on Sunday. Chantal Mackels, a spokeswoman for Quebec's provincial police force, told Reuters the five people were confirmed dead in Saturday's collapse after rescuers worked through the night cutting the roadway in sections to reach trapped vehicles. The overpass came crashing down shortly before 1 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Saturday. Six people were injured, three of the critically, emergency workers said on Saturday. Several motorists told Canada's LCN television network they had called police up to one hour before the collapse to report seeing fissures appearing in the overpass roadbed and chunks of concrete falling to the road below.
