A Canadian solider was killed Friday in an explosion in southern Afghanistan after stepping on an improvised explosive device, Canadian military officials said. The soldier, part of a NATO force fighting the Taliban, died around 1 p.m. in southern Kandahar province's Panjwayi district, the scene of recent fighting and bombings, said Lt. Carole Brown, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Forces in Ottawa told The Associated Press. Brown said the soldier, whose identity was withheld at the family's request, had stepped on an IED _ commonly a roadside bomb _ while on foot patrol. His remains were taken by helicopter to Kandahar Airfield. No other soldiers or civilians were wounded in the incident.
