French President Jacques Chirac Wednesday congratulated Romania on its upcoming entry into the European Union, calling it "an important moment for the EU and a historic moment for Romania." Chirac made the remarks after a private meeting with Romanian President Traian Basescu in Bucharest. Chirac is in Romania for the two-day summit of Francophone countries, which begins on Thursday. The two leaders discussed bilateral issues, although there were no particular problems, Chirac said. Trade and economic relations between the two countries were developing well, he said.
