The United States is now home to 400 billionaires, according to the latest addition of Forbes magazine and its annual list of the richest Americans. While Bill Gates, founder of software leader Microsoft, is still the richest American and the richest man in the world, for the first time everyone on the Forbes list is worth at least $1 billion. The collective net worth of the country's wealthiest people rose $120 billion from last year to $1.25 trillion. Warren Buffett, who runs diversified holding company Berkshire Hathaway, was second with $46 billion; casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, the chief executive of Las Vegas Sands, was the third richest American with $20.5 billion, according to the magazine. A growing trend is the number of women among the top ranks of the wealthy. The daughter-in-law and daughter of Wal-Mart Stores founder Sam Walton, Christy and Alice, were each worth around $15.5 billion. Likewise, Fidelity Investments Abigail Johnson ranks 16th, with $13 billion. The vast majority of the wealth was concentrated in California and New York. Official government statistics list the average income of an American worker at $34,268 per year.
