Three Canadian soldiers and 89 suspected Taliban militants have been killed during a major operation by NATO forces in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, officials said Sunday. An additional six Canadian soldiers serving with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan have been wounded in the operation which was launched Saturday, Afghan defence ministry spokesman General Zahir Azimi told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. ISAF spokesman Major Quentin Innis confirmed the fighting in the Panjawi district of Kandahar province, revealing that NATO-led forces using artillery and air support had pounded Taliban positions in the region.
