At least 48 people were killed and 30 injured Sunday when a water-tank collapsed during a village fair in India's northern Rajasthan state, officials said according to dpa. The roof of the ground-level tank collapsed under the weight of more than 200 people who had been sitting on it to watch a wrestling match in Kama, 170 kilometres east of Jaipur. "Nearly 100 people fell into the eight-feet deep water as the roof came crashing down. In the ensuing panic and scramble, 48 people, mostly young men, suffocated to death or drowned," an official R Venkateshwaran told reporters. Police said 42 others have been rescued and 30 of them have been taken to nearby hospitals. Venkateshwaran said the death toll was unlikely to rise further as 22 people had been treated and eight others admitted in the hospital were "out of danger".
