Forty-seven women inmates overpowered guards and escaped from a prison early Saturday but most were quickly recaptured, authorities said, according to Reuters. The inmates escaped after seizing two guards and ordering them to open all the cells at the prison in Indaiatuba, 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the city of Sao Paulo. Authorities said the women fled with three guns taken from the guards. Thirty-seven escapees were captured by Saturday afternoon, said Marilia Ferrari, a Sao Paulo State Public Safety Department spokeswoman. Two of the stolen weapons have been recovered. The escape came a day after more than 13,000 inmates statewide were granted a weekend furlough for Father's Day, which Brazil celebrates on Sunday. Also Saturday, Globo TV said one of its reporters and a cameraman were kidnapped by two gunmen at a restaurant near its headquarters in the city of Sao Paulo. No other details were immediately available. The Sao Paulo State Public Safety Department said it can't comment on kidnappings that are under way.
