The U.N. Security Council called on Tuesday for closer cooperation between the United Nations and Interpol to increase the effectiveness of U.N. sanctions around the world, Reuters reported. A resolution adopted unanimously by the 15-nation council said improved cooperation with the world police body could help both the United Nations and national governments better enforce sanctions like travel bans, arms embargoes and asset freezes. The council imposes sanctions for a variety of reasons, for example to combat terrorism, crack down on arms dealers fueling a war or punish a rebel leader blocking a peace agreement.
