BANGLADESH PRESIDENT IAJUDDIN AHMAD RETURNED TO OFFICE SUNDAY REFUTING SPECULATION THAT HE WAS STANDING DOWN ON GROUNDS OF POOR HEALTH, OFFICIALS SAID, ACCORDING TO DPA. THE 67-YEAR OLD FORMER, UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR ATTENDED OFFICE AND DID SOME LIGHT PAPER WORK, A SPOKESMAN SAID. "THE PRESIDENT'S HEALTH CONDITION HAS BEEN EXAMINED BY A GOVERNMENT APPOINTED MEDICAL BOARD WHICH REPORTED THAT THE CONVALESCING HEAD OF STATE COULD TAKE UP THE ROUTINE RESPONSIBILITIES OF HIS JOB," SAID PRESS SECRETARY MUKHLESUR RAHMQN CHOWDHURY. AHMAD WAS FLOWN TO SINGAPORE WHERE HE UNDERWENT A COMPLICATED BYPASS OPERATION AT THE MOUNT ELIZABETH HOSPITAL ON MAY 26 LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER SUFFERING A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK. A MONTH LATER, HE RETURNED TO HIS OFFICIAL RESIDENCE IN DHAKA, BUT DOCTORS ADVISED HIM TO REST FOR ANOTHER TWO WEEKS.
