Former Liberian President Charles Taylor was on a plane Tuesday on his way to The Hague to stand trial on 11 war crimes charges, Peter Anderson, a spokesman for the Special Court for Sierra Leone told CNN. Anderson said Taylor was taken by U.N. helicopter to an airport where his plane took off around 9:40 a.m. local time (5:40 a.m. ET). Taylor is accused of fueling a bloody civil war in Sierra Leone that led to widespread murder, rape and mutilation.
