GREEK RIOT POLICE FIRED TEAR GAS INTO A CROWD OF PROTESTING STUDENTS ON THURSDAY, AFTER A GROUP OF HOODED YOUTHS BEGAN VANDALIZING SHOPS AND CARS IN CENTRAL ATHENS, REUTERS REPORTED. REPORTS SAID A GROUP OF HOODED ANARCHISTS INFILTRATED THE DEMONSTRATION INVOLVING MORE THAN 5,000 STUDENTS AND SMASHED STOREFRONTS, BANKS AND PARKED CARS. MANY ALSO THREW PETROL BOMBS AT POLICE. POLICE RETALIATED WITH TEAR GAS AND BATON CHARGES. OFFICIALS SAID 40 PROTESTERS WERE DETAINED AND ABOUT 15 PEOPLE INJURED IN THE CLASHES WHICH LASTED SEVERAL HOURS. UNIVERSITY STUDENTS HAVE REFRAINED FROM TAKING EXAMS AND HAVE STAGED SIT-INS AT MORE THAN 100 UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO PROTEST GOVERNMENT EDUCATION REFORMS, WHICH INCLUDE THE CREATION OF PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES.
