Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld acknowledged today that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death will not mean the end of violence in Iraq, but said “let there be no doubt,” the terrorists death was a “significant blow” to terrorism not only in Iraq, but worldwide. “Given the nature of the terrorist networks, really a network of networks, the death of Zarqawi, while enormously important, will not mean the end of all violence in that country,” Rumsfeld told reporters in Brussels, where he was meeting with NATO ministers. But Rumsfeld said “it will slow them down.” The defense secretary said the NATO ministers reacted “positively” to the news of Zarqawi's death.
