A LAND MINE EXPLODED AT SRI LANKA'S LARGEST NATIONAL PARK, BLOWING UP A VEHICLE FULL OF TOURISTS AND POSSIBLY KILLING EIGHT PEOPLE, A PARK OFFICIAL SAID SUNDAY. A GROUP OF TOURISTS TOLD FOREST GUARDS AT THE WILPATTU NATIONAL PARK THAT THEY SAW A JEEP SATURDAY WHICH APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY A MINE, SAID WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CHIEF DAYANANDA KARIYAWASAM. THEY SAID THERE WERE EIGHT BODIES WITH THE WRECK, KARIYAWASAM WAS QUOTED AS SAYING BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. HE SAID POLICE AND ARMY TEAMS WERE SEARCHING FOR THE BODIES AND VEHICLE IN THE DENSE JUNGLE OF THE PARK, 175 KILOMETERS (105 MILES) NORTH OF THE CAPITAL, COLOMBO. «WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE SEARCH TEAMS RETURN TO KNOW WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED,» KARIYAWASAM SAID.
