The U.S. House of Representatives has passed its version of the 2007 appropriations bill that allocates $30 billion for a multitude of President George W. Bush's “Advanced Energy Initiative” programs. Among the bill's largest commitments are funding for research into clean-burning fuel sources like ethanol, as well as other programs to reduce U.S. oil import dependence through research into wind, solar and other domestic energy sources. At the same time, the House chose not to fully fund a Bush plan to recycle radioactive waste. The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), a global plan to recycle nuclear waste, received only $120 million—some $130 million less than the White House requested.
