Chinese President Hu Jintao received here today secretary general of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council Abdulrahman Al-Atiyyah. In a press statement following the meeting, Al-Atiyyah highlighted the fostering GCC-Chinese relations. He noted that he was briefed by the Chinese President on the vision of China vis-a-vis the situation in Palestine, Iraq, and the Iranian nuclear program. "I have briefed the Chinese President on the GCC march," he said noting that China and the GCC have identical view as regards the importance of avoiding interference in the domestic affairs of Iraq. On the other hand, al-Atiyyah said any provocative act against Iran will have an adverse impact on the entire region, and added "we in the GCC member states believe that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is a legal matter and should not be confined to a certain country." He called for putting pressure on Israel until it joins the treaty of nonproliferation of nuclear weapons, and said China and the GCC member states don't accept nuclear race and they believe that nuclear energy should only be for peaceful purposes.
