Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), has deplored the recent turn of events in Chad involving violence to change the regime in power with serious ramifications for the region, including the severing of diplomatic relations between the Republic of The Sudan and Chad, both OIC Member States; the closing down of their borders; and threats to deport refugees-all of which threatens to aggravate the already critical humanitarian conditions there. Ihsanoglu appealed to all parties to show wisdom, patience, and rationality in their approach to the situation, recalling the good offices he had initiated at the first signs of escalating tensions between The Sudan and Chad in December 2005 with an OIC good-offices mission visiting N'djamena in January and February 2006; urging the two countries to strengthen good-neighborliness relations; and offering the OIC's readiness to pursue its good offices to a fruitful conclusion.
