A soldier died in a hospital on Friday from wounds sustained in a clash with autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebels, an official said, according to AP. The soldier was injured in fighting in an area bordering the predominantly Kurdish provinces of Mardin and Sirnak on Thursday, Mardin's Gov. Mehmet Kiliclar said. He was airlifted to a hospital in the city of Diyarbakir where he died early Friday, the governor said. The death comes amid escalated fighting between the rebels and the Turkish military and follows the worst clashes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish protesters in decades that left 16 civilians dead in rioting and attacks.
