UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday condemned attempts to seize power in Chad by rebels who were reported closing in on the capital of Ndjamena, dpa reported. He said fighting between government forces and the rebels has worsened the security situation in Chad. "I strongly condemn once again any attempt to seize power by force or other unconstitutional means, and appeal to the protagonists to resolve their political differences through peaceful negotiations," he said in a statement. News reports, citing Chadian authorities, said the rebels were moving toward the capital on Wednesday. They said the French government, which supports President Idriss Deby, was considering sending more troops to strengthening its force of 1,200 troops already in Chad. -- SPA 22 31 Local Time 19 31 GMT
