The State Department today said Iran has once again acted in defiance of the international community, with its announcement today that it has enriched uranium, and called upon the Islamic Republic to heed the calls of the United Nations to halt its enrichment program. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters yesterday in Washington that it was important to note that Iran had not produced highly enriched uranium, only uranium of low enrichment levels. "This is another step by the Iranian regime in defiance of the international community," McCormack said. "Once again they have chosen the pathway of defiance as opposed to the pathway of cooperation."
