Two 14-year-old California boys who ran away from home stole their parent's small plane in a bid to fly to Mexico, reported the Deutsche Presse Agentur (dpa). But they ended up in a U.S. juvenile jail after running out of fuel some 100 kilometers into their daring trip and making a forced landing in the desert, suffering minor injuries, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday. According to the report, the plane belonged to the parents of one of the boys who had often flown with his father and is believed to have had rudimentary piloting skills even though he had no licence. After an argument with their parents, the two friends stole the keys to the plane and the hangar at the small airport of Big Bear, some 150 kilometres east of Los Angeles on Sunday. They bypassed three levels of security to take the plane. The airport has no control tower and pilots are not required to check in before taking off. But other pilots at the airport became suspicious when they didn't recognize the plane's pilot and alerted police, who arrived at the airport minutes after the plane had taken off. Less than an hour later, the boys made a forced landing at Joshua Tree National Park, probably because the plane ran out of fuel. The two boys suffered only minor injuries in the crash landing and were arrested on suspicion of stealing an airplane and burglary. --SP 21 16 Local Time 18 16 GMT
