Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has received some 1.4 million votes, or about 65 per cent, of the over 2.2 million counted so far following Thursday's general elections, Electoral Commission Chairman Badru Kiggundu announced Friday evening. Museveni's closest rival and opposition leader Kizza Besigye garnered 712,749 votes, or 31 per cent of the total. The votes were counted from 6,301 polling stations out of a total of 19,786 nationwide, Kiggundu told Reuters. Only one of the three other candidates in the presidential race, John Ssebaana Kizito who heads the country's oldest political party, the Democratic Party, managed to get 1.2 per cent of the total votes cast while the rest were below 1 per cent.
