One person was killed and an unknown number were injured Monday in separate clashes in the Ugandan capital Kampala just three days before planned general elections, reports said, according to DPA. The clashes involved supporters of incumbent President Yoweri Museveni and those of his main rival Kizza Besigye, both of whom attended various election rallies around the city on Monday. A witness said that a supporter of Besigye was killed when he was knocked off his motorcycle by a lorry near the University of Makerere. The driver escaped, while an angry mob set fire to the truck, the witness said. Police were not available to comment on the report. Students at the university - generally seen as anti-government - attempted to demonstrate over a visit by Museveni but were dispersed by riot police and members of the elite presidential guard. The police fired tear gas and cordoned off student residences, while Museveni addressed a crowd of several hundred.
