U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the Security Council on Sunday to swiftly approve a temporary buildup of peacekeeping troops in Ivory Coast, Reuters reported. Annan last week proposed temporarily shifting about 200 peacekeepers and 125 police officers to Ivory Coast from Liberia, to prepare for possible outbreaks of violence in the volatile West African nation. The council was set to take up the plan on Monday. In a statement, U.N. chief spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Annan hoped for quick approval because he was deeply concerned by new threats against U.N. personnel and reports of "violent demonstrations and attacks."
