U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday he was close to naming a successor to Detlev Mehlis to pursue the probe of the murder of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, and one candidate is Serge Brammertz, a Belgian prosecutor, according to DPA. Mehlis, a German prosecutor in Berlin, has left the leadership of the international commission investigating the murder, but agreed to continue to provide assistance until a successor is named. Brammertz has been mentioned as a successor. He is also working in the prosecutorial office of the International Criminal Court at The Hague.
