The scientific knowhow and generosity of Americans provides the United States with a "unique ability" to fight the global pandemic of AIDS, U.S. President George W. Bush said Thursday. "I believe America has a unique ability and special calling to fight this disease," Bush said in an address at the White House marking World AIDS Day. Bush also emphasized the importance of teaching abstinence to young people, marital fidelity and proper use of condoms. Bush launched a 15-billion-dollar five-year emergency AIDS relief programme in 2003 that he said has brought treatment and medicine to 350,000 sub-Saharan Africans. "Our concern about HIV/AIDS does not stop at our border," he said. --SP 2344 Local Time 2044 GMT
