Tropical Storm Delta, the 25th named storm of the busiest Atlantic hurricane season on record, weakened on Friday as it spun in the open Atlantic, posing no threat to land, Reuters said. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) at 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT) and was located 1,270 miles (2,040 km) southwest of Portugal's Azores islands. Delta was moving erratically to the south-southwest but was expected to remain roughly stationary for the rest of the day. The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on Nov. 30, has been the busiest on record with 25 named storms, 13 of which became hurricanes with sustained winds of at least 74 mph (119 kph). The previous record was 21 named storms in 1933. The season also holds the record for the most Category 5 hurricanes, the most powerful on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. --More 2008 Local Time 1708 GMT
