Senegal arrested Chad's former president, Hissene Habre, on Tuesday to face an extradition request from Belgium over charges of atrocities during his eight-year rule, the justice minister said. An international arrest warrant issued in September in Belgium holds Habre, 63, responsible for mass murder and torture carried out by his political police when he was in power from 1982 to 1990. He has been living in exile in Senegal. "Senegal has received an international arrest warrant for the extradition of Hissene Habre and now Hissene Habre is before a judge and the court will decide the status of his case," Justice Minister Cheikh Tidiane Sy told Reuters.
