Climbers in a remote region of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains have discovered an ice-covered body that is believed to be an airman who crashed during a World War II training flight, according to the San Francisco Chronicle Thursday. The body was found on Mount Mendel in the Kings Canyon National Park on Sunday still wearing military fatigues and an unopened parachute. Rescuers hiked for two days to reach the site and dug out the body, which was transported by helicopter to the Fresno County coroner's office on Wednesday. There was no identification on the body. Investigators believe that the man was a World War II veteran who crashed on a training flight in the area. An AT-7 military training plane crashed in the Mendel Glacier area on Nov. 18, 1942. Four of the five bodies were recovered from the wreck after it was found by a hiker in 1947.
