Taiwan's Council of Agriculture said on Thursday it had found birds infected with H5N1 avian flu in a container smuggled from China, the first case of the strain found in Taiwan since late 2003, according to Reuters. Taiwan coastguards seized the Panama-registered cargo on Oct. 14, and tests on Thursday confirmed about 1,000 birds were infected with the H5N1 virus, said Chiang Hsien-Choung, section chief of the animal and health inspection department. Chiang said the Council had destroyed all the birds after testing, and there was little danger of the virus spreading.
