The European Union's executive said on Monday it was preparing to impose a ban on the movement of live poultry and poultry products from the Greek island of Chios, where a turkey was detected with bird flu, Reuters reported. The European Commission said that following discussions between it and the Greek Farm Ministry, local authorities there had already agreed to temporarily restrict the movement of poultry from the area "as a precautionary measure". "The EU decision (on the ban) will be adopted as soon as the national reference laboratory has confirmed the serological results," it said, adding that the results were due on Tuesday. Greece said earlier in the day it had detected the H5 avian influenza virus in a turkey in a small private poultry farm on the tiny island of Inousses off Chios. It was not immediately clear whether it was the H5N1 strain, which has killed more than 60 people in Asia since 2003. The Commission said it had asked Greece to send samples from the suspected case to an EU testing centre. EU foreign ministers have called an emergency session for Tuesday to debate the bloc's response to the potential threat posed by the virus.
