Kurdish rebels on Sunday killed five Turkish soldiers in latest violence in the country's southeast, Turkish authorities said. Kurdish guerrillas killed four soldiers, including a sergeant, in a clash near the city of Sirnak, local authorities said. The rebels also killed another soldier in an overnight attack on a military outpost in Bingol province, Dep. Gov. Fikret Zaman said. A total of three soldiers were also injured on Sunday, The Associated Press reported. The rebel attack in Bingol was the first reported direct assault on Turkish troops since the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, declared a one-month cease-fire on Aug. 20 to seek indirect talks with the government. The government ignored the rebel truce.
