U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld will visit China in October amid efforts to expand military ties and ease tensions, the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific said Wednesday. It would be the first official visit to China by Rumsfeld. U.S. Adm. William Fallon, who was in China to meet leaders of the People's Liberation Army, said Rumsfeld would meet with China's defense minister but didn't give any other details. Such contacts "will all be helpful in reducing the tension, the suspicion _ all the negative things that come out of lack of knowledge," Fallon told reporters.
